Before a trip (international):
- Figure out how to make an emergency call for fire or police in your destination. Many countries do not use 911, and may use very different variants such as 999, 112, 119.
- Determine how to contact the local Embassy.
- Consider purchasing a graphical guide (such as a Kwikpoint guide) that may assist you in communicating in an emergency. http://www.kwikpoint.com/
At an international location:
- Travel in groups whenever possible.
- When at the hotel, make sure the check-in counter does not verbally tell you the room number you are in. If they do, have them give you a new room and instead write down the number instead of saying it.
- Consider asking for an escort to your room.
- Check your room once you enter it for the first time. Check behind curtains, bathrooms and closets. This is also a good time to check for your nearest exit staircase and fire alarm pull stations.
- Keep lights and the TV on, even if you are not in. Consider placing a "do not disturb" sign out when you leave. Keep curtains closed at all times to avoid individuals from the outside being able to determine your whereabouts.
- Lock all valuables in the Hotel's vault -- don't trust an in-room vault.
- Never rely on a door chain or door latch when opening a door. They can be defeated relatively easily. Use the eye piece first; if you are concerned do NOT open the door and call for assistance.
- Determine how to call the front desk or operator from your hotel phone.
- Keep a flashlight, shoes and your room key close to your nightstand in the event you need to evacuate.
- If you go out, leave a note saying where you are going and for how long.
- Consider having "report in" times to your flight crew, family, friends, etc. using a phone so they can keep track of you.

Add ICE (In Case of Emergency)
More and More Police, EMT, and Fire departments are looking at cell phones as a source of finding next of kin , person to contact in case of emergency.
Many times our cell phone is just a list of names to emergency responders.
That is why I.C.E. was started.
Under ICE put the person you want to be contacted in case of emergency,
you can add the NAME -next to ICE in the directory.
Another idea for personal safety is a BODY ALARM. I carried one for 23 years while flying and while walking. One of the body alarms carried turned into a door alarm.
Hope this was helpful
