Default Uniform Allowances

Yesterday I was contacted by a colleague inquiring about Uniform Allowances. I couldn’t provide her with an answer, as I have never been faced with this topic before. What are your thoughts and do you have an “allowance” so-to-speak?

Thanks for your input.

Demi

Would you happen to know anything about the protocol for uniform allowances? I appreciate any help that you can provide.

Thank you,

Demi

I am sorry I missed your earlier message. Ingrid just now pm'ed me your message.

Over all of the years I have been flying it seems that the charter operators have been big on uniforms. My close friend was flying with Jet Aviation during the 90's & they all had to wear Brooks Brothers uniforms supplied by the company. As I recall the quality of these suits was disappointing as they never held up well with dry cleaning. I believe that Jet covered the dry cleaning bills but I could be wrong.

If an operator requires a certain type of uniform then I would think that the company should pay the tab. Other than that we are all expected to furnish our own suits with no expectation of company reimbursement.

You are right: the whole issue of uniform allowances is unfamiliar territory especially with Part 91.

Up until about 1 year ago, we were allowed to wear any business attire we wanted (suits, any color). The owner decided he would like us in black suits, therefore, we received a $400.00 allowance.

Default Suit Allowances

I have never had any type of uniform allowance but I could see where one would fit in. Pun intended!

If I was required to wear a certain color suit that is not as commonly worn such as Flyinjen's all black suit then having someone else pay for it would certainly be advantageous.

What is everyone's favorite designer? I admit to being partial to Anne Klein and Liz Claiborne while my friend cuts a great look in Tahari. Admittedly, I look best in a Travis Ayer suit as he has a line of flattering suits for women with a bodacious frame!

I have a sneaky feeling that you are probably 5 '2, and weigh 110 lbs.

Demi
Sorry for the delay in response.
three years ago i got a $600 uniform allowance. I went a little over that, but I was able to go out and buy what i wanted. My flight dept is pt 91 old school, so the uniform allowance was already and had already been on the books for years so there wasnt any question whether i could have one.
